When the Torah Club lesson mistranslates and misquotes an Early Church celebration of the Lord's Day to make it sound pro-Sabbath keeping instead

 



Everybody makes mistakes, myself included.  But when you publish a book, shouldn't there be an editor who asks if the quote you are using means what you think it means?  In lesson 22-23 of the Beginning of Wisdom, Daniel Lancaster quotes an anonymous work of the Early Church (probably from the 4th century) known as the Apostolic Constitutions.  The quote is used by Lancaster to illustrate the supposed high view of the early disciples of Jesus for the Sabbath.  There's just one problem, while they did indeed respect the Sabbath as something that had been important to God's work with Israel, the actual context of the quote is an entire extended paragraph about the superiority of the New Covenant in Christ, including that of the Lord's Day (resurrection day, Sunday) over the Old Covenant and the Sabbath.

How can this quote be used for the purpose to which the Torah Club material puts it?  Easy enough, part of it is mistranslated, something FFOZ does all the time with, "my translation" uses and explanatory brackets inserted into the text, or as in this case, with blatant word substitution.  Here we have the original Greek nomos (presumably, any ancient editions have been lost, our oldest surviving manuscript of it is from the 12th century; the text's history is actually fairly complex), which means law, casually replaced by Lancaster with Torah.  I've pointed out this liberty taken with the NT text (a far more serious charge) over and over again in FFOZ publications.  Whenever it is advantageous to their argument, Torah is inserted into NT quotes, often when the author's context makes it clear that it isn't the Law of Moses that he's writing about.

The second way in which this quote is abused is by leaving out what comes before it, including the very next sentence, which dramatically undermines what Lancaster is trying to say.  Let's look at an English translation of the entire 36th chapter of book 7 (All emphasis below is mine):

XXXVI. O Lord Almighty Thou hast created the world by Christ, and hast appointed the Sabbath in memory thereof, because that on that day Thou hast made us rest from our works, for the meditation upon Thy laws. Thou hast also appointed festivals for the rejoicing of our souls, that we might come into the remembrance of that wisdom which was created by Thee; how He submitted to be made of a woman on our account; (2) He appeared in life, and demonstrated Himself in His baptism; how He that appeared is both God and man; He suffered for us by Thy permission, and died, and rose again by Thy power: on which account we solemnly assemble to celebrate the feast of the resurrection on the Lord's day, and rejoice on account of Him who has conquered death, and has brought life and immortality to light. For by Him Thou hast brought home the Gentiles to Thyself for a peculiar people, the true Israel beloved of God, and seeing God. For Thou O Lord, broughtest our fathers out of the land of Egypt, and didst deliver them out of the iron furnace, from clay and brick-making, and didst redeem them out of the hands of Pharaoh, and of those under him, and didst lead them through the sea as through dry land, and didst bear their manners in the wilderness, and bestow on them all sorts of good things. Thou didst give them the law or decalogue, which was pronounced by Thy voice and written with Thy hand. Thou didst enjoin the observation of the Sabbath, not affording them an occasion of idleness, but an opportunity of piety, for their knowledge of Thy power, and the prohibition of evils; having limited them as within an holy circuit for the sake of doctrine, for the rejoicing upon the seventh period. On this account was there appointed one week, and seven weeks, and the seventh month, and the seventh year, and the revolution of these, the jubilee, which is the fiftieth year for remission, that men might have no occasion to pretend ignorance. (3) On this account He permitted men every Sabbath to rest, that so no one might be willing to send one word out of his mouth in anger on the day of the Sabbath. For the Sabbath is the ceasing of the creation, the completion of the world, the inquiry after laws, and the grateful praise to God for the blessings He has bestowed upon men. All which the Lord's day excels, (4) and shows the Mediator Himself, the Provider, the Lawgiver, the Cause of the resurrection, the First-born of the whole creation, God the Word, and man, who was born of Mary alone, without a man, who lived holily, who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and died, and rose again from the dead. So that the Lord's day commands us to offer unto Thee, O Lord, thanksgiving for all. (5) For this is the grace afforded by Thee, which on account of its greatness has obscured all other blessings.

The compiler of the Apostolic Constitutions is writing about, or quoting someone else who had previously written about, the respect that the Early Church felt for the Sabbath because of its connection to Creation and the Exodus, but at the same time he emphasized that the Lord's Day, that is Resurrection Day, i.e. Sunday, had become the day on which Jesus' followers gathered to worship because what Jesus had accomplished in the Incarnation, Cross, and Empty Tomb, was so great that it "excels" what had been done before, and "obscured" all previous blessings of God.

Why, then, do Christians worship on Sunday, is it because we hate the Sabbath and all things Jewish?  Nonsense, that's a ridiculous Straw Man.  We do so because even though God's work through Israel before Jesus was awe inspiring and worthy of praise, his work through Jesus and in Jesus puts all of it in the shade.  The Incarnation is a greater visitation of God than Mt. Sinai, and the New Covenant which is open to all the world's people is a greater outpouring of grace than the Law of Moses.

Sermon Video: With Jesus on the road to Emmaus - Luke 24:13-35

What did Jesus do on the afternoon of Easter Sunday?  As it turns out, he took a walk with two of his disciples and spent a few hours explaining to them how the Hebrew prophets of old had predicted everything that would happen to the Messiah, including his suffering and death.  As we celebrate Easter, let us remember our need to share this Good News with those who need it most.

What did Jesus seek out on the evening when his Passion was only hours away?   The company of his friends and devoted followers.  More specifically, their company while they celebrated together God's provision for his people in the past through the Passover, a reminder that God's power and purpose will not be thwarted.

Of the many blessings and joys that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead brings to those who believe in him, one that we will all need some day is the assurance that he has opened up for us a path from death to new life.  Because Jesus has risen from the dead, we too will rise.  This wonderful truth offers us comfort in our times of sorrow, strength in our times of trial, and puts away fear of the future.

"Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" - An Easter reminder that God has already solved our biggest and most important problems

 

In J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece, The Fellowship of the Ring, the titular fellowship arrives with its nine members at the Gates of Moria, the old entrance to the ancient dwarf kingdom long since abandoned.  The fellowship are in desperate straits, their first attempt to move forward with the quest of destroying the One Ring had been defeated soundly when a blizzard closed the mountain pass.  Now, with wolves approaching they find themselves facing a locked door.  Gandalf purposes to lead them under the mountain to the other side, but the way forward is blocked.  Unless Gandalf can decode the door's cryptic message, "Speak friend, and enter" by recalling the password that will open the magically sealed doors, this entire mission may end in failure before it accomplishes anything.

As the scene unfolds, Gandalf tries potential solutions in great number, all end in failure.  Despite all his wisdom and skill, nothing works.  That is until someone with a lot less wisdom and skill, the hobbit Merry, realizes that they had the answer all along.  The door's message should have been translated, "Speak 'friend', and enter."  As soon as Gandalf spoke the Elvish word for friend, the doors came open.  The mystery of the sealed doors was really no mystery at all, the answer was written in plain sight.

As the Easter narrative begins in Mark's Gospel, we see Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome on their way to the tomb to honor Jesus by further preparing his body for its final burial place.  Having come very early in the morning, after a Sabbath when few of Jesus' followers could have known any peace following his horrific murder on a Cross, the women don't realize until they reach the garden that they don't have a plan to remove the large stone from the tomb's entrance.  Thus, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" is a question that needs an answer, one the women don't have.  Or so it seems to them.

In reality, God had already moved the stone, the tomb of Jesus had already been transformed from a place of sorrow, into history's most incredible victory monument.  There was nothing wrong with the women being concerned about the stone, it was a legitimate obstacle from their point-of-view, but keeping with the pattern found in the scripture's of God's will and purpose being in motion whether his people are aware of it or not, God had answered their question before they even asked it.

We sometimes forget this, or at least don't act like we know it, but God has already answered all of life's most important questions for us.  There are no riddles left for us to solve before we can move forward, when Jesus rose from the grave, the question, "What is the meaning of life?" had a full and powerful answer.  So too did, "How am I supposed to live my life?" and "What happens to us when we die?"  God has not called us to serve a cause that we can hope might succeed, but one in which the victory has already been secured, no need for us to worry about rolling away the stone.

The first Easter Sunday culminated with a surprise visitation from Jesus to his closest disciples.  After a day of wonder, angelic messages, and doubt, Jesus suddenly stood among his disciples.  They responded with fear and doubt, but Jesus was willing to show them his hands and feet, and then to eat in front of them, to put their fear to rest.  Afterwards, Jesus took the time to explain how his past three days fit into the prophecies of old before honing in on what his disciples needed to do now that he was back from the dead: share the Good News.

Sermon Video: The Resurrection of Jesus - Mark 16:1-8

Much of what we hear and read about in life is colored by hyperbole.  The greatest and most turns out to be a pitch.  Not so the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  This moment is the turning point of all history, not just human history, history itself.  Why?  Because this is the moment that humanity's two biggest problems, sin and death, were dealt a blow that will ultimately prove fatal.  It was also the moment that God's plan of reconciliation and renewal for all of Creation passed the point of no return; nothing can stop the final victory of Jesus and the triumph of his Church.

What is our response to this Good News?  Share it!  Tells others, bring hope and joy to places of darkness and despair.

Sermon Video: "Peace be with you!" - John 20:19-23

 On the evening of the first Easter, following a confusing morning involving an Empty Tomb and visitations from angels, the disciples of Jesus were gather together, with the doors locked for fear of arrest. Suddenly, Jesus enters the room and dispels their collective anxiety and fear, telling them, "Peace be with you!" (Shalom in Hebrew) Not only was their recent fear releaved, for Jesus was truly alive, but the future's concerns were suddenly less daunting. Jesus immediately tells them their next step, to go and tell the Good News. Without Jesus, they were anxious and afraid, with Jesus, they were confident and ready to take on the world. That's the difference that the presence of Jesus makes, he brough peace then, and he brings peace now.

Sermon Video: How to know the power of Christ's resurrection Philippians 3:10-11

How can I know Christ? Really know him? The Apostle Paul considers that thought and responds with two ideas: know the power of his resurrection, and participate in his sufferings. In other words, not only intellectual knowledge about Jesus, but experiential as well. In order to become "like him in his death" we must become like him in his life. Imitate Jesus. The end result of the power of Christ's resurrection for those who believe will be fully transformed and glorified resurrected bodies, so why not strive for as much Christ-likeness as we can (by God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit) obtain here and now? To truly know Christ is to embark upon a life transforming path of becoming like him.

Sermon Video: In Christ all will be made alive - 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

The fear of death is common to all of humanity, and in the present COVID-19 crisis, it is being felt keenly by millions. But death is not the natural state of humanity, it is an aberration, one that God has provided the solution to. Because the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a historical fact we can place our hope for life beyond death in Jesus. Those who are in Christ, that is, those who have repented of their sins and chosen to live by faith in this world according to God's Word, have not only received a promise of full live in the world to come, but a more abundant life here and now as well. This is the blessing that God offers to all who believe.

Sermon Video: Pity the Christians? - 1 Corinthians 15:12-19

Here's a hypothetical: What if there is no resurrection from the dead (Jesus included)? For Christianity and Christians this is catastrophic, not only would our message and mission be invalidated, and worse yet be found to be a lie, but our own hope of salvation from our sins would be false. There is no Christianity, no Gospel, without the triumph of Jesus Christ on Easter. To those who imagine a better world without Christianity (and religion in general), that world has no hope at all, for humanity's embrace of evil is indisputable, and it cannot be solved by non-spiritual means. Without the resurrection there is no hope, not just for us, but for the whole world. Praise be to God, then, that Jesus Christ has risen in triumph from the grave.

Sermon Video: According to the Scriptures - 1 Corinthians 15:1-7

The Apostle Paul begins his extended discussion of the significance of the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ with a reminder to the church in Corinth that it is upon the historicity of the Gospel that he related to them that they have taken their stand.  By way of bolstering the claim of the eyewitnesses that Paul lists, he emphasizes that the death of Christ upon the cross, the meaning of that death, and the resurrection three days later were all foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures.  Far from being mere happenstance, the events that unfolded were in every detail a part of the plan of God, from beginning to end, accomplishing the goal set up by God: affecting a sacrifice of the perfect God-Man on our behalf, enabling those who believe to be forgiven because he took our place for the punishment (death) that our sins merited.  Thus Paul lays out the foundation of the points he will be making as the chapter unfolds concerning the necessity and implications of the Resurrection.

A Refutation of: Easter isn't about sacrifice, it's about faith and love - by Jay Parini



The opinion piece from CNN was written by Jay Parini, an author and English teacher at Middlebury College.  It appears that his perspective is that of someone who believes Jesus to be a good example, but not the Son of God, and the Bible to be a useful book, but not inspired Scripture.  My comments on his essay will appear in italics and bold interspersed throughout.

Even when people have no idea about this season, around this time of year there is an awareness that something is happening. A person comes into the office or classroom with a charcoal cross on his or her forehead; a friend or colleague is taking a trip to see family for the holiday; the stores are selling Cadbury eggs.
Certainly the calendar marks off the day as something special, and there is also a general sense of the turning season: the long winter has ended and summer itself winks in the margins of daily life.
Indeed, Easter marks a change, and it has to do with the feeling of rebirth or regeneration. But it is more complicated than that.
I have a visceral sense of all this, having been raised in a fundamentalist household, and my memories of Easter reach back to beginnings: my father, a Baptist minister, understood the centrality of this special day, even the whole Easter weekend. As a boy, I fidgeted through long services on Good Friday and listened to readings of the seven last words of Jesus on the cross, which built up to the resounding: "It is finished."
I recall being quite upset, imagining the cruelty of the sacrifice of God's only son. I thought it was horrific. I didn't want him to have to die for miserable sinners like myself.
Soon enough I grew to dislike this version of Easter, with the crucifixion as some form of blood-revenge. Why would a God who had gone to the trouble to create humanity take such umbrage? Why would he need to put his only son on the cross and see him publicly tortured—brutalized--to satisfy his feelings of disappointment and anger at what his people had done? Was I missing something?

Short answer; yes, you were certainly missing a great deal.  First off, you should be upset imagining the cruelty of the sacrifice of God's Son, it is a horrific death of an innocent man.  Whether you wanted him to die on your behalf or not, isn't the question.  The real question is what God wanted to do, and God was not content to let humanity remain in rebellion against him, was not content to let that rebellion result in the destruction of those he had created in his image.  God decided to rescue humanity, and God alone had both the wisdom to understand what that would entail and the power/righteousness to carry it out.

The famous hymn about being "washed in the blood of the Lamb" sounded, to my young ears, increasingly disturbing. God is better than this, I thought. The human beings he had created were surely good enough for him?

One of the great conceits of the modern age: We can define God ourselves (or eliminate him altogether).  God is holy, perfect, free of any contamination of sin.  "Good enough" is not an option, it is not even close.  To be in the presence of God is to likewise be holy, or to be dead.  The design of the Tabernacle and Temple illustrated this barrier between God and humanity with its concentric layers of approaching God's presence and the limitation of only the High Priest on the Day of Atonement being allowed to enter into the Holy of Holies and see the presence of God between the cherubim of the Ark of the Covenant.  Why would a Messiah have been necessary at all if humanity was "good enough"?  And what would Jesus' mission have been if not the salvation of humanity?  Either Jesus Christ came to save Lost sinners, the only way that it could be done, or he died a failure upon that Cross.

Simplistic ideas about the meaning of the crucifixion still abound, and there is a vast industry founded on what is called "substitution theology." One can easily dig through the Hebrew and Greek scriptures to snatch occasional verses that seem to support this transactional theology, with God in a bargaining mode, needing "payment" for our sins.

This paragraph is dripping with disdain for those of us (that is, anyone retaining the Orthodox Christianity of the Early Church, Ecumenical Councils and Creeds, the Reformers, etc.  Not to mention the authorial intent of every NT author) who understand that what Jesus accomplished on the Cross was a substitute for the punishment that each of us has earned through rebellion against God.  And yes, one can easily read both the Old and New Testament and find passages of Scripture that support the understanding that what Jesus did was a payment for our sins.  This traditional, mainstream, accepted interpretation of the Scriptures on the question of the purpose and efficacy of the Cross is far from "simplistic", it is an awe inspiring act of Amazing Grace, unparalleled love, and selfless sacrifice.

But I've studied the scriptures carefully, especially the gospels and Paul's letters, and I see no reason to capitulate to this downsized version of Easter weekend, with a vengeful God putting up his own son on a cross for satisfaction of some kind.

"I see no reason to capitulate to the Scriptures"  Not exactly what he said, but the essence of the point.  I have no idea how God's willingness to redeem humanity from sin, and in the process destroy the power of sin and death, can be viewed as a "downsized version of Easter".  I am also at a loss how anyone can honestly have studied the Gospels and Paul's letters and not see the repeated quotations of Jesus that this is the plan of God (Mark 8:31 for example: He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again) and the repeated explanations of Paul that this sacrifice was on our behalf (Romans 3:25 for example:  God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—).  FYI, maybe read the book of Hebrews too, the entire thing is about the superiority of Jesus' sacrifice.

That Jay Parini thinks that Jesus upon the Cross has anything to do with vengeance shows a significant lack of understanding of the theology he has decided to reject.  Holiness, righteousness, justice, grace, love, and mercy are the themes around which the discussion of God's redemptive plan revolve, not vengeance.



In any case, the idea of satisfaction or "payment" is fairly recent, tracing back to St. Anselm in Cur Deus Homo? This treatise, written in the late 11th century, put forward the idea of the death of Jesus as atonement for human sins, a "satisfaction" for the wrath of God.
A century or so later, Peter Abelard famously rejected Anselm's theory, suggesting that the death of Jesus was simply an act of love, showing humanity a way forward, an example of divine benevolence. Jesus lived and died to teach us how to live and die ourselves, or how to "empty ourselves out," as St. Paul says. The crucifixion is first and foremost a prelude to the Resurrection.

This "fairly recent" argument is utterly specious.  I suppose you can't trace the idea of substitutionary atonement back to the New Testament itself if you utterly ignore the portion of Scripture that teach it (Matthew 20:28 or Colossians 1:19-20 for example).  It is true, but not some sort of important point, that nobody stated the theory expressed in the NT exactly the way that St. Anselm did until he did it, but perhaps Jay Parini has forgotten about St. Augustine who wrote the following in On the Trinity in the 5th Century, “What, then, is the righteousness by which the devil was conquered? What, except the righteousness of Jesus Christ? And how was he conquered? Because, when he [the devil] found in Him nothing worthy of death, yet he slew Him. And certainly it is just, that we whom he [the devil] held as debtors, should be dismissed free by believing in Him whom he [the devil] slew without any debt. In this way it is that we are said to be justified in the blood of Christ. For so that innocent blood was shed for the remission of our sins…  He conquered the devil first by righteousness, and afterwards by power: namely, by righteousness, because He had no sin, and was slain by him most unjustly; but by power, because having been dead He lived again, never afterwards to die. But He would have conquered the devil by power, even though He could not have been slain by him: although it belongs to a greater power to conquer death itself also by rising again, than to avoid it by living. But the reason is really a different one, why we are justified in the blood of Christ, when we are rescued from the power of the devil through the remission of sins: it pertains to this, that the devil is conquered by Christ by righteousness, not by power.”  The list could go on and on of those who believed that Jesus died for our sins from the Early Church Fathers to the Reformers, but if St. Augustine isn't enough of an example to ignore this paragraph of the essay, nothing else will be.

So this is the "grand vision" of Easter that he prefers?  Jesus lived and died to show us an example of how to "empty ourselves" {To what end?}  How is this a solution to the problem of sinful human nature?  How does this address the fundamental questions of sin, justice, death, and the afterlife?  To think that a perversion of Easter where Jesus dies as some sort of example, and accomplishes nothing else, somehow paints a kinder view of God is ludicrous.  What then of the prayer that the cup be taken away in the Garden?  What then of the refusal to save himself?  The entire Bible falls apart when you jerk away the foundation upon which it is build, to ignore so much of Scripture because you prefer that it say something else is not an option open to those who would have faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus had faith in God, resting in the arms of an all-embracing love. That's a fancy way of saying that Jesus trusted that all would be well in the end, which is what Easter teaches us. And a crucial text here -- a key one -- is Romans 3:22, where Paul suggests that reconciliation with God, which is a better way to define "righteousness," is achieved through imitating Jesus in his self-abandonment on the cross on Good Friday.

Yes, Jesus had faith in God (more specifically the Father, Jesus himself was just as much God as the Father), and yes, he knew that all would "be well in the end" (Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.)  But that is NOT what Easter teaches us.  Hey man, just chill out, it will all work out just fine in the end.  Sigh, We are so far off from Orthodox Christianity and the traditional accepted meaning of Scripture that it is hard to find a point of commonality.  The quotation of Romans 3:22, certainly an important passage, is odd to say the least.  Paul is NOT suggesting that reconciliation/righteousness is achieved through OUR imitating Jesus; quite the opposite in fact.  Paul is stating categorically that our righteousness comes FROM God through faith in Jesus (Note the crucial parallel discussion in Ephesians 2:8-9, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.).  If only he had kept reading, for in Romans 3:24 the true source of our justification (the repair of our relationship with God) is made clear, "and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."  Are we to imitate Jesus?  Absolutely.  Does that imitation reconcile us to God?  Not in the least, and for a very good reason.  We have no chance, no hope, of imitating Jesus until AFTER we have been reconciled to God through faith in Jesus, at which point we receive the Holy Spirit who empowers us to live like Jesus.  Neither our salvation nor our subsequent imitation of Jesus is on our own merit, nor does it puff up our pride, all of it is according to God's grace.



I would translate this critical verse in this way: "We are reconciled with God by imitating the faith of Jesus, and we hold him dearly for this." (I always prefer to use the phrase "hold dearly" for "believe," as this is the root of the word. It has no reference to "belief" in the epistemological sense of that term.) There is clearly a huge difference between having "faith in Jesus" -- a nod of assent -- and imitating the "faith of Jesus."

This entire paragraph is meaningless.  You do not have permission to translate Scripture in ways that suit your fancy.  Yes, there can be more than one acceptable translation of the Bible's Hebrew and Greek into English, and they do vary slightly, but not like this.  The original Greek of Romans 3:22 and Jay Parini's preferred self-translation are saying the opposite.  Paul wrote about God's righteousness, available to us through faith in Jesus.  Parini's mis-translation is about our own supposed righteousness achieved through our own effort.

Yes, there is a difference between having "faith in Jesus" (necessary for salvation) and imitating the "faith of Jesus" (discipleship).  One is how we become reconciled to God, the other is how we walk once we have received reconciliation.  He evidently wants to eliminate the need for "faith in Jesus" and replace it with imitating the "faith of Jesus"  Nope, we need both, and we need "faith in Jesus" first.

Easter teaches Christians this, I believe: to emulate the faith of Jesus in the goodness of the universe-- to rest in God, whatever we mean by that great holy syllable, which seems a stumbling block for so many in our highly secular world. It teaches us about what it means to lose ourselves, our petty little selves, in order to gain something larger: reconciliation with creation itself.
Christians all walk with Jesus out of the tomb on Easter morning, reborn as free people, released from the straightjacket of time itself. And this is nothing but joy.

Holy non-sequitur Batman; Jesus had faith in the goodness of the universe??  The universe is not good (or evil), how can an inanimate object have a moral quality?  God is Good.  We are NOT to seek reconciliation with Creation itself (some sort of Pantheism?).  Our sole need/priority/purpose is to be reconciled with God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).  Jesus died to make that reconciliation possible for us, he was raised to life again to proclaim his victory over sin and death and to give us the hope that if we place our trust in him we too will be raised to life on the Last Day.  

I pity an interpretation of Easter that is about relaxing and not getting too caught up in a busy life.  We need not be liberated from time itself.  We are not prisoners of time.  We, as human beings, are enslaved to sin (rebellion against God).  Our only hope, our only recourse, is to stop trying to dig our way out of the hole, put our trust in what Jesus Christ has already done on our behalf (shedding his blood in payment for our sins and rising from the dead), and start living by the Spirit according to Jesus' example and God's Word.  The true meaning of Easter?  Give me that old time religion, it's good enough for me.  Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world, nothing less; my hope is in the crucified and risen Savior.

Sermon Video: "Why do you look for the living among the dead?" Luke 24:1-12

In Luke's account of the resurrection of Jesus, there is no effort taken to hide the initial reactions of the women at the tomb (frightened, confused), nor of the apostles (disbelief, confusion, wonder).  Luke's Gospel is not a sanitized version of events, but rather an account of real people grappling with incredible news at a time when they were still trying to process the emotionally and psychologically devastating news of Jesus' execution.  God's Word does not condemn, initial, hesitancy or doubt, rather it requires that we move from that beginning toward trust and belief.  What brought this period of confusion/doubt to an end for the first witnesses of Jesus' resurrection?  His appearance personally among them.  And while we of this generation have not been afforded the blessing of seeing Jesus face to face, we can still get to know Jesus more, still deepen our faith and set doubt aside.

Sermon Video: "He is not here, he is risen" Matthew 28:1-10

As the faithful women came to the tomb seeking to care for the body of Jesus on Sunday morning, they encountered a remarkable sight: An angel sitting atop the stone which had been rolled away from the entrance to the now empty tomb.  At that point, fear and confusion predominated, but thankfully the angel soon turned their sorrow to joy by proclaiming that, "He is not here, he is risen".  This was the first proclamation of the Good News, a message of hope and joy that would soon be spreading towards the ends of the earth.  For indeed Christ had risen, death could not hold him for it had no claim upon his sinless life, and in rising from the dead Jesus had forever broken the power of sin and death over humanity.  This is the turning point of history, the historical fact toward which God's prophets had pointed, and upon which the future would hinge.  What did the angel tell the women to do with this Good News?  Go and tell his disciples; share it, spread it, let it be known; and so it is for us today as well, let us share the Good News: Jesus is alive.

Sermon Video: The Curtain is Torn - Luke 23:45 (1997)

We all start somewhere, maybe Billy Graham had the audience on the edge of their seat during his first sermon, but the rest of us need time to develop both our writing and our delivery.  This was my first sermon, delivered as part of an Easter service in 1997 at my home church of Galilee Baptist in Saranac, MI. 

The focus of the short message is the tearing of the curtain in the temple between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies (Most Holy Place) when Christ breathed his last, from Luke 23:45.

Sermon Video: The Rise of the Son - Mark 16:1-8

On the first Easter morning, it was not the apostles to whom the message of the resurrection of Jesus first came, for they were in hiding, rather it was to the faithful women who had followed Jesus for years, and who stood near the cross as he died.  To these women God entrusted the most important message in the history of the world, that Jesus Christ had risen from the grave.  It is this same message of hope and joy because Jesus has conquered sin and death that the people of God today, the Church, are tasked with sharing with the world.

Sermon Video: "Let us rejoice and be glad" - Revelation 19:6-9

This text was chosen for our Easter worship service because the event that it talks about, the future "wedding of the Lamb" is actually the long-awaited victory party for the triumph of Jesus' resurrection.  The Apostle John's vision of the Last Days includes a vast multitude which gathers to rejoice and praise God because the reunion of God with his people is finally to come about.  The symbolic wedding of Christ with his bride, the Church, demonstrates the complete removal of the barrier of sin that once stood between humanity and God, as such it is a time of joy that is has no parallel in our world, a world where all victories are only temporary or partial.  It was the resurrection of Jesus, following his willing sacrifice on the Cross, that sealed this victory and guaranteed that all those who put their trust in him will one day not only be at the wedding, but be among the great multitude that collectively constitute the bride of Christ.  The question then for us all is simple: will we be invited to this wedding to take our place in the family of God, or not?  The means of securing an invitation are equally simple: put your trust and hope in Jesus; he died to pay for your sins, he was resurrected open the way for us to new life after death.  Let us rejoice and be glad.

Sermon Video: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD" - Psalm 118:22-29

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on the day we now commemorate as Palm Sunday, he was greeted with cheering crowds waving palm branches and spreading their cloaks on the path as they shouted, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD."  Where did the inspiration for that particular cry of acclamation come from?  The words are from Psalm 118, the last of the six psalms that were part of the celebration of Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles.  When pilgrims came to Jerusalem for these important festivals, the words they chose to apply to Jesus were already on their minds.
When looking at the context of Psalm 118:26, we discover that just a few verses earlier in verse 22 is the line that Jesus applied to himself after telling the parable of the tenants, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone".  There in that one psalm is both the joyous praise offered to God because of the miracles and teaching of Jesus, and the realization that he will be rejected at first only to be vindicated by God.
The psalm ends as it began, with thanksgiving to God for his goodness and his unfailing love.  As Jesus entered Jerusalem to the cheers of the crowd, he well understood that he would be leaving the city less than a week later to the sound of jeers, and he wouldn't wouldn't be gently riding a donkey, but struggling under the weight of a cross.  Jesus knew this, and he also knew that he was following the will of the Father, that death would be swallowed up in victory, and that God would deserve even more thanksgiving when the implications for humanity of the triumph of Easter were shared as the Good News of the Gospel.

Sermon Video: "But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead." - I Corinthians 15:12-22



There has been much discussion in recent generations about the possibility of removing the teachings and ethics of Jesus from the life and divine claims in order to preserve a version of Jesus that feels acceptable to those who discount the possibility of miracles.  When Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he reminded them of the original message of the Gospel that he had taught, and they had believed, which contained a clear understanding that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead three days after his crucifixion.  The people of Corinth had evidently believed Paul’s word initially but had later succumbed to or been tempted by doubts arising from cultural problems with the idea of a bodily resurrection.  In the end, the modern skeptic and the ancient Greeks of Corinth have the same problem; they doubt that the resurrection of Jesus could have taken place.  What is the response of the Word of God to both groups?  Without the resurrection there is no hope.
            The entirety of the Church and the Christian faith are built upon the historic fact of the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.  Without this foundational truth, the whole structure built upon it, from ethics and charity to prayer and worship, will come crumbling down.  Paul was not willing to accept a “diet” version of Christianity in his day any more than the Church should be willing to listen to calls to leave out the miracles in ours.  Without the resurrection, our faith is meaningless, our purpose is lost, and our sins remain.
            The problem faced by those who refuse to believe in the resurrection is that they have then no answer for the problem of evil in our world.  Without the resurrection as a means to obtain forgiveness, healing, and reconciliation from God, we have no hope of a better tomorrow and certainly no hope in any life beyond this one. 
            “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead”.  Hope is available because Jesus did conquer sin and death, forgiveness is available because Jesus’ payment for your sins was accepted by the Father and his sacrifice was vindicated by the power of his return from the dead to new life.  From this central truth, all of Christianity flows, and from it we offer God’s love to the world.
