Sermon Video: The Purpose for which God works all things - Romans 8:28-30

Romans 8:28 is an oft misunderstood piece of scripture, in part because it is often quoted or considered apart from its context, especially vs. 29-30.  So, what is the 'good' to which God is working all things?  Paul defines this in vs. 29: "to be conformed to the image of his Son."  What is God working throughout human history to accomplish?  Christ-like adopted children.

Human failings, tragedies and sorrow, and evil itself, all  are not 'good', and God doesn't want you to pretend that they are.  What they are, however, is NOT capable of derailing God's purpose in your life.

Sermon Video: All Creation awaits the Redemption of God's people, Romans 818-25

We, as God's people redeemed by Jesus, are already saved, but not have not yet been fully transformed into what we will become (Christ-like).  We have begun a journey by faith, but are traveling there still, with hope to help us along the way.  In fact, the Apostle Paul tells us that all of Creation (personified for literary purposes) itself anticipates this transformation, it too suffers presently and looks forward to glory to come as God's redemptive plan reaches its glorious conclusion.

The danger of defining 'real' Americans vs. the necessity of categorizing 'real' Christians



It has become increasingly popular for politicians and pundits to tell their hard core followers that they represent the 'real America', and that those who have opposing viewpoints are conversely not 'real Americans'.  That this attitude is inherently dangerous, divisive, and ultimately a precursor to violence toward the group of people now labeled as un-American, even anti-American, history has attempted to teach us.  Once a group of people, defined by whatever parameter, have been deemed to be the 'other', it is a short road to convincing those who have drunk the Kool-Aid that 'they' should be incarcerated, expelled, or eliminated.
On the other hand, I have often referred to some people as 'self-professed Christians' or even 'so-called Christians'.  That such labels have been used in the past (on the wrong basis), for example during the Thirty Years War, to foment persecution and violence, is horrifyingly true, yet the need to have a proper definition of what a genuine follower of Jesus Christ looks/acts like, and call out those who fail to live up to it, remains.  Why?  

1. An earthly human kingdom vs. a divinely created spiritual kingdom
The United States of America is a human construct.  Like all governments it derives its legitimacy from God's delegated sovereignty (Romans 13:1-2), but it is no more divinely created than the hundreds of other nations that exist in our world today, or the nations or kingdoms that existed in years past.  As such, notions of citizenship in this nation have changed (mostly for the better) over the years, and are subject to changing laws and even constitutional amendments such as the 13th-15th Amendments that sought to remedy the original Constitution's flawed acceptance of the notion that Blacks were not citizens, or the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote.  Citizenship in America has always been a work in progress, it has always had ways in which our government and our people failed to live up to our ideals.  

Christian citizenship is different in many ways.  It was instituted by Jesus himself (Matthew 16:18
NIV  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.), populated not with any group of people, or based in on any geographic boundaries, but with individuals called out from amongst all peoples (Revelation 7:9 NIV  After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.), and also defined by a standard that does not change and cannot be amended (John 14:6 NIV  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.)

Given those differences, the United States of America can, will, and should change in an effort to "form a more perfect Union", and it can be torn asunder by division.  The Church, which is the body that comprises the individuals who have been called by the Holy Spirit to follow Jesus, must maintain its original calling and purpose, uphold its given mission and parameters, and is incapable of effective division (Ephesians 4:5-6 NIV  one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.) even if it has been split in two for a thousand years, and in three for the past five hundred.  What those who claim to follow Jesus, whether they be genuine or not, cannot do is split his Church.  America, however, has no such guarantees.  We survived one Civil War, and the tumult of the 60's, but have no promise that if we continue to sow division we will survive the next conflagration. 

2. E pluribus unum vs. the Mind of Christ
The people who comprise human kingdoms and nations are never of one mind.  Attempts to force uniformity have resulted in some of history's most horrific abuses and genocides: the Spanish Inquisition, Indian Education Program in 19th century America, Mao's Cultural Revolution from 1966-76 which cost the lives of untold millions, or the ongoing Uighur genocide in China today.  In fact, differing viewpoints are a strength of human institutions, preventing them from becoming stale or blind to reality.  The generation of the Founding Fathers famously disagreed on the direction that the new nation should take on a host of issues (ask Alexander Hamilton), with some preferring the vision of Madison and others that of Jefferson.  If those who disagree, about any particular issue, are not 'real Americans', the ability of our democracy to continue to function decreases.

The Church is likewise made up of people with differing viewpoints, often contentiously, but with one key distinction that separates it from America: We are all heading in the same direction, learning from the tutor, and seeking to emulate the same hero (John 14:26 NIV  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.    Philippians 2:2 NIV  then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.).  Thus while those within the Church can, healthily, disagree on the secondary issues, we are united, for more strongly than any nation, on the foundational ones.

3. Law abiding citizens vs. the Law of Love
Once a person becomes an American citizen, either by birth or naturalization, that person remains a citizen for the rest of his/her days (short of committing actual acts of treason, or renouncing one's citizenship).  Each citizen is as much a 'real American' as the next.  Given that we enjoy the protections of the Bill of Rights in America, as long as people don't break the law (or aren't unjustly convicted of breaking the law), there is no legal grounds to value the beliefs and hopes of one citizen over that of another {providing that they aren't advocating for anarchy or gross immorality}.  Our representative republic helps transfer that mass of opinions and beliefs into something approximating a functioning government, but those who hold minority opinions are not less American than those who happen to currently be in the majority.  In addition, what was once majority opinion can find itself in the span of a generation, or less, to be a minority view.  That being said, you can love America, and be a fully patriotic citizen of this nation, and still hold any number of political/economic/cultural viewpoints.  I know that many partisans, especially those sold on the Culture Wars, would strongly disagree here, but if we are to have a United future, ever increasing venom against the 'enemies of the people' cannot prevail.

It is not the same in the Church.  In order to be a real/genuine Christian, there must be concrete evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of what is known as the Fruit of the Spirit.  This term is derived from Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  If these qualities are not present, whatever the person in question might claim to believe, he/she cannot be a true follower of Jesus.  This is not in any way a partisan viewpoint, it isn't a liberal or conservative one, but a Truth derived from the very nature of the Church itself and everything we know and understand about what it means to be washed clean by the Blood of the Lamb.

Matthew 7:22-23 NIV  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NIV  If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

James 2:14-19 NIV  What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

1 John 2:6 NIV  Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

1 John 3:16-18 NIV  This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

The verses above but scratch the surface on how many times the New Testament addresses this topic, each time affirming the absolute need for heart conversion, not just head knowledge or mouth proclamations.  This then is why we must distinguish between 'so-called' or 'self-professed' Christians and the genuine article.  God chose to make it abundantly clear in his Word that checking a box on a survey, voting a certain way, or wearing a cross on a necklace isn't good enough.  Outward appearances and empty words are not good enough.  Unless true life changing Fruit of the Spirit is present, on an ongoing basis, there is no reason to belief that such a person is a Christian.  Conversely, if evil is present, tolerated and habitual, there is also ample reason to doubt the sincerity of any profession of faith.

This is actually not a change from the Old Covenant to the New.  The prophets of old wrestled with a people who believed that having Abraham as an ancestor was good enough, that it would guarantee their position before God, regardless of their conduct.  That lack of genuine faith led inexorably to the destruction of the Temple and the Exile in Babylon.  Unfortunately, Jesus found that same shallow attitude present in his own day, and reacted very strongly against it: Matthew 3:8-10 NIV  Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

It is far easier to be a good citizen of the United States than it is to be a genuine Christian.  At the same time, the United States is a far more fragile vessel than the Church of Jesus Christ, and while divisions sown in either will bear harmful fruit, we know that the Church will endure, America has no such promise.

So, the next time you hear a politician, pundit, or regular person spouting off on social media about how 'we' are the REAL Americans and 'they' are not, don't be fooled, that road leads to self-destruction.  Likewise, the next time you hear someone proclaiming their bona fides as a Christian while still embracing hate, lust, greed or the like, and/or while not exhibiting love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control, don't believe it, fruit-less Christians don't exist.

Christianity has always been a self-imposed Cancel Culture, on purpose

Few ideas are as controversial in this moment in American history as the notion of a Cancel Culture.  Firebrands and pundits on both the political Right and Left are up in arms either calling for those on the opposite side to be 'cancelled' or decrying that someone on our 'team' was cancelled by 'them'.  Both sides seem immune to the irony that they're playing the same game while yelling that the game isn't fair.  That being said, and without making any particular recommendation as to how we as a country get out of this ever deepening Culture War (aside from an Armistace where both sides agree to stop fighting, which seems unlikely given how much power and money is to be made on both sides by those who wage it), it occurs to me that this moment could also be instructive regarding the nature of the Church in particular, and Christianity in general.  You see, it may come as a surprise to some, but the Word of God, both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, repeatedly calls for the people of God to 'cancel' their own involvement in immoral culture by not participating in it.  God was calling for boycotts long before anyone considered them as an economic/political tool.  This is not a call for seperation from the culture, for both Israel and the Church are called to be a light to those 'living in darkness', but a call to voluntarily avoid those aspects of culture that lead to temptation, particularly temptation to lessen our commitment and devotion to God.  Examples abound, here a few to illustrate the point:

Deuteronomy 18:9-13  When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God.

One of many places where God emphasizes to the nation of Israel that they must not be like the Canaanites, that in fact God's judgment upon the collective culture of the tribes that inhabited the land at the time of the Exodus was to purge the land of them lest their evil practices become a snare of imitation to the his covenant people (which in fact it did in future generations, repeatedly).

Leviticus 18:24-28  Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

How serious was God about this warning?  Very serious.  If the Israelites failed to maintain a culture, using that term as a catch-all for the collective behaviors and choices of the people, that honored and pleased God while avoiding the very things that their neighbors did which caused judgment upon them, God would drive evn his own people from the Promised Land.  In the end, the ten northern tribes, known at the time as Israel, where conquered by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. and dispersed among that empire's peoples, and the two southern tribes, known as Judah, were sent into a seventy year exile in Babylon in 586 B.C. precisely because they continued to indulge in idolatry, sexual immorality, and failed to provide for the unfortunate among them (typically referred to as widows, orphans, and foreigners as they were the most likely to need charitable help).  God took the requirement of a much more pure people than those living around them very seriously, when his own people failed to live up to this standard he judged them and didn't hold back.

When Christ founded the Church and set forth the New Covenant, it was clear that he intended his people to be 'in the world but not of the world' a phrase inspired by Jesus' answer to Pilate:

John 18:36  Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

How could they do that if they lived scattered among the nations, in many cases as a minority?  The answer was to be 'salt' and 'light' wherever they happened to be, acting as both purifying and illuminating agents.

Matthew 5:13-16  You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.  14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

How then can that 'saltiness' and 'light' be maintained?  How can Christ's followers be different?  The presence of the Holy Spirit as a counselor is of course key, as is the renewal of the hearts/mind/spirits of God's people known as regeneration.

Titus 3:5  he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Romans 12:2  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The work of God in us is the beginning, a necessary beginning, but moving forward Christians are called to avoid the things in life that lead to temptation.

Colossians 3:1-8  Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

And what are Christians, individually and collectively, supposed to replace the immoral aspects of the particular culture in which they happen to find themselves with?  The answer isn't specific, but a set of principles and qualities that should occupy our hearts and minds.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

As this quick examination of relevant scriptural passages indicates, Christians and Christianity were intended to be discerning of participation in culture, an exercise in self-control and restraint that does not end when Christians went from being a minority to being the majority in a culture, or vice versa.  What particular aspects of culture one chooses to participate in and what one chooses to abstain from is an ongoing conversation that requires both a knowledge of God's Word and a discerning heart to apply it to the present day.  This conversation takes place on an individual basis with our own conscience, and on a collective basis as a local body of Christ or Christian community in general.  Our response to culture is not achieved through a list of rules, which will be obsolete as soon as the ink is dry, but by teaching ourselves and others to evaluate our choices according to Christian principles, shunning that which is immoral and embraces that which is righteous.  

The Roman Empire utilized worship of the emperor as a means of unity within their diverse and far flung empire, but Christians refused to participate in this behavior because it violated God's commands against both false worship and idolatry.  As a result, during the first few centuries of the Church, Christians faced both sporadic and organized persecution, sometimes resulting in imprisonment or death, that tried to force them to join in.  Some gave up their beliefs to save themselves, others held firm and became martyrs.  In the end, after Constantine, the Church was on the road to creating the rules, not defying them.

As Christian Americans, whether aligned with the political Left or Right, we need to ask ourselves an important question: If 'they' came for 'us' and forced us to abandon or 'Christian culture' what would they really be taking?  What do we think, say, and do that is distinctively Christ-imitating?  How much of what we take in and put out through our hearts and minds reflects the Fruit of the Spirit, and how much is just our preferred portion of the culture in which we live, not really Christ-reflecting at all?  These are hard questions, and many of us wouldn't have much that is distinctively Christian to give up if 'they' forced us to.  Here's the thing, 'they' shouldn't have to force you to walk away from the immoral aspects of our culture, Christ has already commanded you to, the Spirit has already convicted you of it, and your ability to be 'salt' and 'light' depends upon it.  A Christian 'Cancel Culture'?  Yes, its called self-control.

Is the 'Cancel Culture' coming after racists?  That shouldn't have anything to do with us.  If it hits one of 'our people' shouldn't we want to know why?  Are they coming for expressions of sexual immorality or greed?  Why is that hitting so close to home?  Maybe we need to be asking ourselves how 'Christian' the culture we've embraced really is.

Sermon Video: At the Last Trumpet: We will all be changed

When Christ returns, we will all be changed. All those who have faith in Jesus Christ, whether then living or already dead, will be resurrected or gathered (as needed) by Christ and will receive the transformation to Christ-likeness that has been promised. But when will these things occur? There is not on single interpretation of the totality of prophetic literature, some view the Rapture as the next event (Pre-tribution, pre-millenial), others see the millenial kingdom being established first (amillenial or post-millenial). However one interprets the Scriptures, this much is certain, Christ WILL return, and we won't know about it ahead of time. God has not given us the time, lest we look at the world with excessive optimism or pessimism, only the knowledge that these things will one day occur; and that's all we need. We can safely ignore those who claim to see signs of the impending End, and those who offer advice based on those supposed insights. Instead, let us continue to serve the Kingdom of God, and continue to live as though today may be our last day (as it may be for any of us) and plan as if God has many things left for us to accomplish here on earth.

Sermon Video: When the dead are raised to new life - 1 Corinthians 15:35-44a

Having striven to establish confidence at the church in Corinth regarding the reality of Jesus' resurrection, and the certainty of our future resurrection, Paul now explains a little bit about what that resurrected life will be like. Four things will disappear: perishable, dishonor, weakness, and natural body. Four things will replace them: imperishable, glory, power, and spiritual body. What exactly does this mean?? Beyond our comprehension, but rest assured that which makes immortality as we are now a curse not a blessing will be removed, to be replaced with glorious Christ-likeness.

Sermon Video: How to know the power of Christ's resurrection Philippians 3:10-11

How can I know Christ? Really know him? The Apostle Paul considers that thought and responds with two ideas: know the power of his resurrection, and participate in his sufferings. In other words, not only intellectual knowledge about Jesus, but experiential as well. In order to become "like him in his death" we must become like him in his life. Imitate Jesus. The end result of the power of Christ's resurrection for those who believe will be fully transformed and glorified resurrected bodies, so why not strive for as much Christ-likeness as we can (by God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit) obtain here and now? To truly know Christ is to embark upon a life transforming path of becoming like him.

Sermon Video: God will preserve his people, increasing his glory - Jude 24-25

Having just instructed the Church to show mercy to those who doubt, Jude now encourages all believers by assuring us that God is capable of keeping us from stumbling (whether through our own failures or any outside attack), and thus present us before his throne, WITHOUT FAULT! This is the culmination of the Christian hope: To stand in the presence of God, not only free from accusation, but clothed in the righteousness of Christ. This promise that God will finish what he has begun in each of us offers to us great comfort when things are difficult, and motivation to be self-sacrificial toward the mission of the Kingdom of God. Lastly, Jude ends by speaking of the timeless nature of God's glory, majesty, power, and authority, all of which existed before God became the Creator, and all of which will only increase and more and more people are brought into the family of God by faith in Him.

Why must I as a Christian love all people?

The following quote from John Calvin (Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 7, section 6) illustrates our duty as disciples of Jesus Christ.  In light of the anger and vitriol on social media by Christian who should not be acting in that way, this reminder of what our Lord requires from us is certainly needed.  Brotherly Kindness is not optional.

Moreover, that we may not weary in well-doing (as would otherwise forthwith and infallibly be the case), we must add the other quality in the Apostle’s enumeration, “Charity suffiereth long, and is kind, is not easily provoked,” (1 Cor. 13:4). The Lord enjoins us to do good to all without exception, though the greater part, if estimated by their own merit, are most unworthy of it. But Scripture subjoins a most excellent reason, when it tells us that we are not to look to what men in themselves deserve, but to attend to the image of God, which exists in all, and to which we owe all honour and love. But in those who are of the household of faith, the same rule is to be more carefully observed, inasmuch as that image is renewed and restored in them by the Spirit of Christ. Therefore, whoever be the man that is presented to you as needing your assistance, you have no ground for declining to give it to him. Say he is a stranger. The Lord has given him a mark which ought 
to be familiar to you: for which reason he forbids you to despise your own flesh (Gal. 6:10). Say he is mean and of no consideration. The Lord points him out as one whom he has distinguished by the lustre of his own image (Isaiah 58:7). Say that you are bound to him by no ties of duty. The Lord has substituted him as it were into his own place, that in him you may recognize the many great obligations under which the Lord has laid you to himself. Say that he is unworthy of your least exertion on his account; but the image of God, by which he is recommended to you, is worthy of yourself and all your exertions. But if he not only merits no good, but has provoked you by injury and mischief, still this is no good reason why you should not embrace him in love, and visit him with offices of love. He has deserved very differently from me, you will say. But what has the Lord deserved? Whatever injury he has done you, when he enjoins you to forgive him, he certainly means that it should be imputed to himself. In this way only we attain to what is not to say difficult but altogether against nature, to love those that hate us, render good for evil, and blessing for cursing, remembering that we are not to reflect on the wickedness of men, but look to the image of God in them, an image which, covering and obliterating their faults, should by its beauty and dignity allure us to love and embrace them. - John Calvin.

How much better would our world be if everyone followed the advice of James that we ought to be, "quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry"?  Sadly, the opposite is often the case for many people as they are instead, slow to listen, quick to speak, and quick to become angry.  For the Christian, this path is not optional, as we are commanded to be disciples of Jesus Christ, ever growing toward Christ-likeness by learning to value other people enough to put our own impulses and desires aside.  When we make progress toward that goal we will be able to listen to other people, because we care about them, hold on to our tongue to avoid saying things we shouldn't, because we care about other people, and keep our anger in check, whatever its cause, because we care enough about other people that we aren't willing to hurt them to indulge our anger.
Anger is the key to the point that James is making about our attitude as Christians.  Anger simply does not lead to righteousness.  We are not the righteous judge that God is, nor do we have our anger under control, so that even our "righteous anger" at evil tends to run away with us.  It is better for us, as Christians, to not allow anger a place in our hearts, we're in far less danger of giving in to the temptation to sin without it.

Sermon Video: Only the foreigner praised God - Luke 17:11-19

On his way to Jerusalem with his Passion drawing nigh, Jesus is confronted by ten men suffering from leprosy who cry out to him for pity.  In response, Jesus sends the men to the priest to be certified as being cleansed, before they are healed.  When they act in faith and begin the journey, all ten of them are healed.  Only one of the ten, however, takes the time to return to Jesus to praise God, and that one was a foreigner, a Samaritan.  This episode is one of many in which Jesus finds greater faith among foreigner than among his own Covenant people.  This phenomenon reinforces his teaching that Paul will later make explicit that with God there are no racial, geographic, or class distinctions.  There is one Lord, he is Lord of all, and all who would approach him must do so alike through grace by faith.
There is thus no room, whatsoever, in the Christian faith for prejudice or racism of any kind.  It is incumbent upon us, as followers of Jesus, to be on the side of the refugees, the aliens, and generally all those who are treated like "them" by "us".  In Christ, distinctions of "us" and "them" become meaningless, for there are only two types of people in the kingdom of God: sinners and redeemed sinners.

The Wingfeather Saga and Christ typology: An enthusiastic book recommendation

Having just finished reading the fourth and final book in Andrew Peterson's Wingfeather Saga, The Warden and the Wolf King, I can now gladly say that the Christ typology represented in the book is both reminiscent of what Jesus did, and emotionally powerful in its own right.  I won't go into any details about which character in the book represents Christ, nor in what way, because I hope you'll read this series for yourself staring with Book One, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness.  Peterson's Christian allegory has much in common with C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia in that it too presents a moving story of love, courage, the ravages of sin, and the self-sacrifice of the heroes needed to combat it.  Where Peterson differs from Lewis is in the nutty quality of his writing and characters, something more reminiscent of Monty Python than you might expect from literature, but also something that gives this series the charm that will make its morals feel natural and not preachy.  I know that my favorite author of all time, Tolkien, hated allegory despite having C.S. Lewis as his best friend, and normally I'm not much of a fan of the genre either, but Peterson's allegory is a very loose one, the reader won't realize that there is a Christ figure in the story at all until the very end for that character is but one of a half dozen who display the moral virtues of, as he is called in the Wingfeather Saga, The Maker.  I wholly recommend this series for Christian parents to read to and with their children, it does contain the violence of war as the villain of the series, Gnag the Nameless, seeks to enslave the world and must be stopped, but stories of the strong defending the weak are ones we all should celebrate, plus kids will absolutely love the zaniness that permeates the story from beginning to end.  I look forward to reading these books to my daughter Clara who was born this past April, I just need to wait a few years to start.

Sermon Video: Persistence in Prayer - Luke 11:5-13

Persistence is an interesting quality in people, it can be the making of our success, and it can be the cause of our destruction.  When persistence is combined with righteousness the result is saintly, when it is combined with vice, the result is grotesque.  In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus expounds upon his answer to the question from the disciples, “Lord, teach us to pray”, by talking to them about being persistent in prayer.  The Greek term used by Jesus could also be translated as: audacity, boldness, or even impudence.  The overall idea is that we must be actively seeking an answer from God to our prayers and never give up until we find it.  But what are we to be praying for?  What is the object and goal of our prayers?  To answer that question, Jesus first gives a parable illustrating the value of persistence, followed by the command to us that we are to ask, seek, and knock knowing that we will receive, find, and have the door opened for us.  Lastly, before answering the question of what it is we’re praying for, Jesus reminds us that even human fathers are wise enough, and good enough, despite the fallen state of humanity, to give their children good things that will benefit them.  If human fathers can do that much, imagine what our heavenly Father has in store for his adopted children.
                So, what is the object and goal of our prayers, that which Jesus has told us we will receive if we ask?  The Holy Spirit.  Jesus isn’t talking here about jobs, health concerns, money, family troubles, or even freedom or justice, all of which are legitimate things we need and the focus of many of our prayers.  The one thing that Jesus is telling us we must diligently seek from God in prayer, because by so doing we will find it, is the Holy Spirit.  Jesus isn’t talking about salvation, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is given eagerly by God to everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, and it is that single act of faith that makes God’s grace available to us as we become his adopted children.  Jesus is talking about the life-long process of transformation, we call it sanctification, which follows after our salvation with the goal of transforming us into the likeness of Jesus himself.  We will all one day be like him, in the life beyond this one, but for here and now we can become more like him each day as we purge ourselves of sin and embrace righteousness.  That process is a long and difficult one requiring an ongoing commitment and effort from us, enabled by God’s power working in us, and yes, supported by persistent prayer. 

                What will the answer to your prayer for healing be?  I don’t know, pray and trust in the will of God.  What will the answer to your prayer for that job you need?  I don’t know, pray, trust in God.  What will the answer to your prayer to be more like Jesus be?  God will hear you, he will answer you, and he will transform you if you are persistent, bold, audacious, and even impudent in continuing to ask it of him.

Hobby Lobby ruling by the Supreme Court

Regarding the Hobby Lobby ruling...Why was Hobby Lobby able to successfully make their case before the Supreme Court?  Because the Green family had DEMONSTRATED their Christian beliefs clearly over time through the policies that their corporation enacted.  When's the last time a corporation was acknowledged as having clear moral values?  Hobby Lobby pays its employees twice the minimum wage, is closed on Sunday to give employees a day of rest and worship, has long provided health care in a business where most employers did not, and pays for full page advertisements at Christmas and Easter honoring Christ.  In case you're wondering, all of those decisions by the Green family cost them money, but because they were the right thing to do, they did them anyway.  Anyone who knows anything about Hobby Lobby knew they were run by a Christian family.  Can your business say the same, can your family? 
Being a Christian is not something for Sunday only, it should be obvious and clear to all that you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and not because you're loud or obnoxious about it, but because you show the love of Christ in how you live each and every day.  As Jesus told his disciples, "whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God." (Luke 12:8)  What does it say about you if people who know you reasonably well would be surprised to learn that you're a Christian?  On the other hand, it says a lot about the love of God when people who don't even really know you still know that you're a Christian because you've built up a reputation for honor, integrity, charity, patience, kindness, etc.  The Supreme Court decided that family owned corporations don't have to pretend that they're not led by Christian values, what's keeping you from doing the same about your life and your family?

Take Time to Be Holy



This past Sunday we sang an old hymn, "Take Time to Be Holy", written by William Longstaff, that begins with this phrase in its second verse: "Take time to be holy, the world rushes on"  Those words stuck with me because they seem even more true today than when they were written.  Our world rushes on at a frantic pace.  We have things planned days, weeks, months, even years in advance; our calendar seems to fill up before we even get to each day.  On top of our general business, we’ve now added smart phones and social media that keep us connected to everyone 24/7 and fill up those moments that in the past may have enabled us to slow down and think about what we’re doing.  Time flows by and we’re too busy to see it passing, we may not stop to take a breath for weeks at a time.  How, in this sort of environment, can we be a holy people?  The hymn has it right, we need to “take time”.
What does it mean to “take time to be holy”?  Holiness doesn’t just happen on its own, it isn’t something that God does through us whether we’re part of it or not.  Holiness is deliberate and it needs considerable time and effort on our part.  To be holy means to be set apart for God’s use.  The tabernacle and the ark were holy because they only had on purpose, the worship of God.  Likewise, things like communion and baptism are holy because they are only used in our fellowship together and worship of God.  So, how can you or I, as individual followers of Jesus Christ (and part of the larger body of Christ) BE holy?  The only way that we can hope to accomplish this is to set aside parts of our lives for the use of the kingdom of God.  This includes time, resources, and talent, and it needs to be something that we consciously choose to do.  We all have commitments and responsibilities, God wants us to honor those, and we all need to take time to exercise and rest both our bodies and our minds, but we need to make sure that we’re not squeezing God in when we have a few extra minutes.  We need to take the time to be holy, make it a part of our lives, a regular and expected part, because it is the only way that we will be able to make progress in our mission of becoming like Christ.  Take a look at your calendar for the next week, the next month, where is the time in there for you to be holy?

Sermon Video: "think about such things" Philippians 4:8-9

What do we think about each day?  Can we shape our thoughts in order to think about better things?
After explaining that anxiety can be eased through bringing our concerns to God, Paul continues by saying that our thoughts should focus upon things which are, true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.  But how do we do that, how do we avoid negative thoughts and embrace positive ones?  Throughout the Bible, right thinking goes hand in glove with right actions.  If we, as Christians, are going to focus upon the things of God, things like those in Paul's list, we're going to have to do so through our actions.  The more we do things which can be described as true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy, the more our minds will be shaped by those actions.  Along those same lines, the more we fill our daily lives with godly things, the less room we will have for negative thoughts as well as temptations toward sinful actions.  As always, this is a group effort of the whole of the Church to be Christ-like, are efforts can and should be together.  This isn't a promise of a life free of anxiety or troubles, the Bible never promises that, but it is the path toward greater Christ-likeness, and that will guarantee, as Paul says, that "the God of peace will be with you."
